Jetpack

Postby timespace » Thu Aug 24, 2006 6:18 am

Since the 1920's when the first "rocketpack" was introduced by Buck Rogers, science fiction groupies and futuristic dreamers have loved the idea of a jetpack, myself included. My question is this, and I have been thinking of ways to do it: is it possible to build a working jetpack?

I know there have been previous working models, so here are some criteria:
1. Would be capable of extended flight times
2. Would be capable of producing enough thrust to lift 10-20m

Check out Wikipedia's article on the jetpack at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_pack

I've always been fascinated by them myself, but it is a very risky way to fly. :)

If the Mythbusters couldn't do it, then it's impossible. Busted.

LOL, they were limited to one month and $10,000 dollars to make a personal flying machine from scratch using plans purchased off the internet... of course it didn't work. :)

Check out the real jet packs that have actually flown.

That was a joke. Of course some work.

Ha! Okay. :)

I guess what jetpacks need is some sort of safety autorotation or gliding feature attatchment in case the fuel runs out (the problem is that adds to the overall weight). It could be a very hard landing, especially with one of those things strapped to you. :)
