We don't know for sure. Some theories are that there are 11.

You haven't left an option for those who think there's exactly 7. But I think it's 11.

Superstring theory requires seven EXTRA dimensions wthin our 4D spacetime...maybe that's what you heard? Keep in mind it hasn't been verified as "correct" nor have we found any substantial evidence to suggest it as a realistic model for our universe.

Why exactly 7? Please explain so we can... exchange ideas :).

No, we have three spatial dimensions.

rob identifies with we and claims.
pwrong knows who is who and so he states what he believes while leaving room for others to think otherwise.

whoeversayswhatever, i find herenow infinite number of dimensions to play with & exist in.

No one knows for sure. We seem to exist in 3 spatial dimensions and one time dimension but there are many things in physics that can be more easily explained once you allow for the existence of higher spatial dimensions.

As Hawking says, it is a meaningless question. No one will ever know. It seems we have 3 spatial and a time-D, but theories require more. Now, if we have a theory that claims 5D and one that has 8D, and they are unified in a GUT that requires 10D (mathematically) what would you choose? In the positivistic approach, one can not know which is the real theory. "Perhaps the difference between what's real and what's not is merely in our head." (Hawking).

hawking is nihilistic in this case: tries to back up nonexistence of answer, still he's offering that nonexistence as answer. so he's positing nothing as something positive, and is even tautological.

anyway, he's right with the difference between what's real and what's not being in our head, if we omit his (perhaps unconscious) paternalistic materialistic deterministic supposition about the brain-function.

some already knew, and some know perhaps. that is not enough for others to know. unfortunately.
