The New 4D Golf Game

Ideas about how a world with more than three spatial dimensions would work - what laws of physics would be needed, how things would be built, how people would do things and so on.

The New 4D Golf Game

The 4D miniature golf program. This guy has a whole series of videos about what he did to get such speed. He had to figure out how to use the 3D-oriented GPU hardware or his nefarious purposes.

Good for him! It has a lot of visual appeal. (Predictably) I have some suggestions. On a flat course the best view is w,x,z, without the useless up-down y dimension. You can't see the ball or putter but you CAN see the shadows of such objects, which conveniently are 3D. The target hole is 3D.

If the course is not flat then perhaps better is something like w, x, y+z. You combine two dimensions into one. If you have familiar objects like this then I believe the brain can sort it out since it knows what is supposed to be vertical or horizontal. It's hard to say exactly how it would be done without trying it.

So overlay the volume view and the regular view?

I don't understand what you mean.

My best guess for displaying 4D on a 2D screen is this. Let's say we have w,x,y,z dimensions. y is up, z is forward, x is left-right, w is ana-kata. Suppose x and z are unchanged, while the traditional y is replaced by w+y/2. The viewer can see the horizon so that tells them intuitively what is going on with up-down.
