how could fred see anything? since he is living in a 2d world, he would not be able to see anything since their is no depth right? so really he would not even be able to see lines because if he did see lines in his plane world that would mean that there is depth.

The 3ed dimension’s definition of depth differs from the 2nd dimensions. Their depth is our width and visa versa. Put it on a x,y,z axis. To us, x = width, y = height and z = depth, but in the 2nd dimension, z does not exist, they only know x and y. So when they look straight forward, they are viewing along the x axis. They would not be able to view sideways, in fact, to them, that’s beyond impossibility, it is unimaginable. So if there was an object in front of them, whether it was 3 dimensional or not, they (2nd dimensional people) would only see how high it is (y axis) and how long it is (x axis). Of course if the object was taller than them, they would only see a standing line in front of them. It’s kind of hard to explain but use your imagination and you should get it.
