if you were a two dimensional being how would you explain to another 2 dimensional being what the 3rd dimension was like?

get detailed, remember you only have 2 dimensions to work with...

I submitted the "porn" one, because I did stumble on this one, even though not while looking for porn.

As for explaining 3d, I would show him two 2 dimensional cutsections of a 3d object, and let him stare at it for the rest of his life. Eventually, he will get it, right? :D

While contemplating the universe...

The techniques are the same, and they all are used in the so called "dimensional analogy". There is a lot to say about these. I suggest reading quickfur's website http://eusebeia.dyndns.org/4d/index.html, especially the "Visualisation" topics.

right!

(though I would not take cut sections, but perspective projection.)

the only probleme is that a perspective projection requires interior lines wich a 2d being can not see

No, what for me trionian are wireframe lines are for the duonian points. I can not look through planes but through lines, the duonian can not look through lines but through points, so we simply reduce one dimension. I have to guess which facets are meant the duonian has to guess what line segments are meant.

how many shell like objects are humans able to see through? we don't have x-ray vision... why do lower dimensional beings get it?

and if the image is made up of pionts... how are the points laid out?

We can see through no shell-like objects, as they are 2D surfaces, the same as our vision, unless the shells are glass.
This is why we illustrate with line-like objects, and construct a wireframe to outline the shape and allow us to see front and back.

The flatlander can see through no line-like objects, as they are 1D surfaces, the same as his vision, unless they are glass.
This is why we illustrate with point-like objects, and construct a connect-the-dots to outline the shape and allow him to see front and back.

The linelander only sees a point. Perhaps we can influence the color of that point but... he's probably just screwed.

I'd describe the third dimension as portals stemming off the universe through a direction that is neither up or down or left or right.
