Connected in a Higher Dimension

Postby Hugh » Fri Sep 04, 2015 2:03 am

Is it possible that there are connections in a higher dimension between things that seem unconnected?
Take for example a 3D hand, where the fingers intersect a 2D plane halfway up each one, so that to the 2D plane, there are 5 unconnected intersecting circles, yet in a higher dimension, the fingers are connected to each other through a hand, and are all part of the same being.
I was thinking today of ants, and how a colony acts as one being, and if it was possible that we only see a 3D slice of them at a time, yet they are all connected in a higher dimension to a single being. :)

Exactly!

Us as well, all interconnected, but seemingly disconnected, because of our limited viewpoint of the higher dimensional space around us and of us...

On the other hand, it can be a perfectly physical thing of individuals conforming.

For example, if you watch people at the railway station, you will see that they tend to fall in step with someone else, and this spreads through the crowd. This was one of the features observed in the london millenium bridge, which tended to sway under traffic.

Of course, things can be connected because they are sibling processes.

Yes, agreed Wendy.

What I'm wondering though, is about instances where a limited viewpoint may prevent the seeing of a higher dimensional connection.

For example, in some of the wonderful higher dimensional animations on this site there are photos that show several different separate blobs, that merge into one whole connected blob as the object is rotated around...

Here's an example from one of ICN5D's animations:

Could a limited dimensional viewpoint see only the apparently unconnected separate sections of the entire whole?

Food for thought: what if the reason for conformity and (apparent) connectedness is because the universe actually has a finite degree of freedom, so that complexity in one place necessitates simplicity somewhere else? Like a computer with finite resources, devoting more resources to one part necessitates reducing resources elsewhere.
