Fraction of life supporting universes

Postby anderscolingustafson » Sat Feb 26, 2011 11:47 pm

If universes with alternate sets of physical laws exist what would be the fraction of universes that would have some set of physical laws that would make some form of life possible in that universe? I know that this ratio of universes should be different in universes with different numbers of dimension. For instance I would imagine that the fraction of universes with that would have some set of physical laws that would make life possible would be greater for 2d universes than for 3d universes and greater for 3d universes than 4d universes and so on. So what would be the fraction of universes capable of supporting life for 2d, 3d, and 4d?

Simply put, a randomly chosen universe would almost surely not support life.

How precise does the strength each of the four fundamental forces need to be in order for life to exist? In other words what percent would the strength of each of the fundamental forces need to be off by before a universe would not be stable enough for life?

There's no answer to that question!

Whether life is possible depends on many more factors than just a few universal constants - you could probably set them to all sorts of ludicrous values and still find some way to fix the rest of the universe so that life was possible.
