4d Cities

Ideas about how a world with more than three spatial dimensions would work - what laws of physics would be needed, how things would be built, how people would do things and so on.

4d Cities

In 3d because roads form boundaries the only way for two buildings on opposite sides of a road to connect is with a bridge. In 4d the ground would be a 3d surface so roads would not form boundaries like they do in 3d. In 4d two buildings on opposite sides of a road could be connected to each other without blocking off the road.

I was just thinking that perhaps in cities in 4d buildings would be interconnected so that it would be possible to walk from one side of a city to another without going outside. I mean perhaps the structure of a city in 4d would be similar to the structure of a sponge in 3d.

Basically, you can have all services (which are lines), running without intersection. This goes even for inbound vs outbound traffic.

So, for example you can have multiple platforms on a station, with access to any track from the station building in the middle of the platforms. It's like several straws in a drink.

You could even walk from A to B without having to worry about crossing streets or whatever. Lines don't cut the city into blocks like they do in 3d. So you don't have this "block" nonsence. You could pretty much walk from say Brooklyn in NYC to say, New Jersey without ever crossing a street.

This has been discussed before, many times. A recent thread started with 4D wheels and turned into a discussion about city layouts (around page 2 or so).
