Etymology of the Catalan Solids

Postby Adam Lore » Wed Feb 13, 2008 1:24 am

Does anyone know the etymology for some of the words used to describe the Catalan Solids / Archimedean duals.. like disdyakis, triakis, hexakis, etc. ?
I've never seen these anywhere else, and can't seem to find any info on them online. I can pretty much tell what they mean, but was wondering if there is an exact definition, and also how you are supposed to pronounce them.

tri.kis (thrice), used in geometry and crystralography to refer to a trippling of faces, such as raising a pyramid on the faces. See OED.

I haven't heard of them. They sound Greek.

The catalans are the duals of the uniform figures.
