How religion might have started

One possible explanation for how religion was founded is that it may have been discovered in one culture and by one person and then spread via trade between cultures until it eventually reached all cultures. If this is the case then it would mean that all religions both living and extinct are all descended from a common ancestor religion that diversified into all the religions that have ever existed.

Another possibility for how religion got started is that religion may have been discovered independently multiple times in different cultures at different times and in different places and then spread from those different cultures until it reached all the cultures other cultures.

Yet another possibility for how religion got started is that some or all aspects of religion were discovered only once but that multiple cultures discovered one or more of the aspects of religion. For instance there may have been a culture that came up with the idea of an afterlife, and another that came up with the idea of gods, and another that came up with the idea of luck, and others that came up with the other aspects of religion and all these elements eventually got incorporated into religion.

If religion was discovered once in the course of human history and then spread throughout the world then religion might just be something unique to Earth and even if there is intelligent on other planets or in parallel universes most of it might not have any kind of religion. On the other hand if religion was founded independently in multiple cultures then that would mean that it would be much more likely that if there are other intelligent life forms either on other planets or in parallel universes that they would independently discover religion as well although the religions they have might be very different from those practiced by humans.
